IMAP and SMTP settings

Server names, ports and app passwords for Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Outlook and mobile mail apps.

Paid plans include IMAP and SMTP, so you can use eoinbox in any mail app. The Free plan forwards mail to your existing inbox and has no IMAP or SMTP access.

  • Username: shown next to the app password when you create it.
  • Password: an app password, not your account password (see below).
  • Authentication: normal password.

Use port 465 if your app offers it. Port 587 with STARTTLS is there for apps and networks that need it. POP3 is not offered.

App passwords

Mail apps sign in with an app password, so your real password and your two-factor login never go into a third-party app.

  1. In eoinbox, open Settings → App passwords and click Create.
  2. Give it a name you will recognise later, such as "Thunderbird laptop".
  3. Choose what it may do: IMAP (reading), SMTP (sending), or both.
  4. Copy the password into your mail app. It is shown only once.

Each app password shows when it was last used. Delete it if you stop using that app or lose the device, and only that app is signed out.

Automatic setup

Many apps set themselves up when you enter only your address and app password:

  • Thunderbird and many other apps read the autoconfig record.
  • Outlook reads the autodiscover record.
  • Some apps use the SRV records _imaps._tcp and _submissions._tcp.

These records are optional on your domain; see Connecting your domain. For @eoinbox.com addresses everything is already in place. On iPhone, iPad and Mac, you can also download a configuration profile from Settings → Devices in eoinbox.

Sending from aliases in a mail app

In webmail, every address you own is available for sending automatically. In a mail app you add them as identities (Thunderbird: Account Settings → Manage Identities; Apple Mail: edit the Email Address field of the account and add more addresses). Use the same SMTP settings for every identity.

JMAP

Apps that support JMAP can connect to https://mail.eoinbox.com and discover everything from there. JMAP is faster than IMAP on mobile networks and supports push.

Troubleshooting

  • Authentication failed: make sure you use an app password, that it allows IMAP or SMTP as needed, and that the username matches the one shown for it.
  • Cannot send from an alias: the address must exist in your account, and its domain must be active (SPF and DKIM green in the dashboard).
  • Connection times out on port 465 or 587: some networks block mail ports. Try the other port, or another network.
